the design pRocess
The first spark of inspiration may come from a diverse array of sources, from nature documentaries to fables to dreamy Swedish folk tales, which in turn contributes to a vague idea of a theme. The idea in turn ignites the reseach phase. Books, magazines and the Internet are vacuumed for inspirational imagery to form a cohesive story.
Once the mood board is complete, the lenghty painstaking drawning process begins. Rough sketches are made to ensure the envisioned layout works correctly. Each design takes between two to four weeks to complete and every tiny detail is hand-drawn in pencil or fine-liner. The finished illustrations are scanned, processed and put into repeatable patterns in Photoshop.
Finally, the pattern is being intricately digitally coloured, giving the design a distinctive look combining traditional craftsmanship with cutting-edge techniques. The colour palette for each collection is determined by the season.
Lena Holtzberg creates captivating designs, to be treasured for years to come.
